In the summer of 2010, I was preparing for one of the hardest things I would ever attempt to accomplish, a 100km bike ride in support of “The Ride to Conquer Cancer” for Norton’s Cancer Institute (as a tribute to my mom).

Something would happen on this particular summer afternoon that would forever change my life and my belief in God.

I had overslept waking up frustrated because I had meant to get out earlier before the rain started and the heat of the day set in, I was training virtually every day now and most of my weekend mornings and late evenings were spent training at Bernheim Forest.

It was particularly quiet here on these early weekend mornings, and I spent most of my time while riding in prayer, speaking with our father as I would continue to add more and more mileage to my training routine.

As each hour passed in prayer I felt more and more at one with our Father and at great peace. However, as close as I felt, there was always an ever-present question in the back of my mind, does our father hear my prayers, does he really care about me, and if I’m being completely truthful here, does he even exist?


Rain was forecasted on this particular afternoon and again I was frustrated that I had let the morning slip away before the heat of the day had set in.

I was pushing for heavy mileage now and with the rain clouds closing in I just knew there wasn’t going to be enough time to get my ride in for the day.

So, I decided to do what any Christian might consider doing in these circumstances, I would pray for clearing weather. Enough so I could complete my training before the weather turned bad. “If you could just keep the rain away until 2:00” I prayed, that would be enough.

My prayer was soon followed with a voice in my head that I’ll never forget, “So that you may know that I Am God”. I heard this repeated again and again in my head until the words themselves poured from my lips.

I recall thinking “Is that really you God?”, not fully understanding what had just happened, and what happened next is something I now consider a gift from God.

As if on queue, the rain clouds that had begun to form over and around Bernheim began to slowly fade, and at one point the sun even appeared. I continued to pray and thank God for keeping the rain away.

As if this were not enough and just as I was about to complete my final lap and call it quits for the day, an intense clap of thunder shook the ground, and I mean it “SHOOK!” The Ground!

Dare I look at the time I thought? I couldn’t help but look but I already knew in my heart what time it was. It was precisely 2:00 PM. Just what I had prayed for!

I quickly made my way back to the car and loaded my bike on the rack. I climbed into the car with tears streaming down my face and by now it was absolutely pouring outside.

I can’t explain it, but I cried and I was joyous all at the same time and all I could think about is that I had just talked to God and that He had heard my prayer.

Not only had he heard it, but he had also answered it in such a way as to leave no room for doubt that “He Is God”!

I called my wife Leslie, tears streaming down my face, to tell her what I had just experienced, and it began to hail. Of course, it did, God wanted me to know what He had been holding back.

I had spoken to God and he had heard me! I would never again question my faith or His existence. I knew unequivocally, from that very moment, that our God is alive and that He hears our prayers!

Since that day I have had many conversations with our Father. I can’t always hear Him as clearly as I did on that hot and rainy summer day in 2010. But I am absolutely certain He hears me.
