The proper time for Peter to follow in the Lord’s footsteps had not yet come, First the Lord needed to walk the path Himself, the path which led to the cross.
Hopefully we all shall reach the time when we will walk the pathway which leads to the cross. It comes at different times for different people. Tragically, to some that time never comes as they are lost in themselves and the ways of this world.
We must share the Good News and let God touch the hearts of others. We must keep our spiritual vision focused on the cross, walking the path which leads to it.
