Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor. You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. You love every harmful word, you deceitful tongue! Psalm 52:1-4 NIV

Come on. Admit it. Almost every one of us has had times when we have boasted about something we have done. Let me ask you this. When you did your boasting, did you at all stretch the truth? Did you magnify the importance of that which you did? In your boasting did you fail to disclose the importance others played in that which was accomplished?

What was the purpose of your boast? Were you seeking self-approval, or the approval of man? Did your head and ego get inflated? Did your boast ever come back to “bite” you because someone found the truth to what really happened, and it was not quite like you had told of it. Too often a case of boasting can be an “open mouth and insert foot” scenario.

What do you think your boasting said to God? Are you saying to Him that you can do things on your own and it is totally your doing and not because of Him? Do you think He approved of what you did?

Reading the verses from this Psalm, I would venture to say that no, God did not approve of your boasting. Do you realize that you have nothing which has not been given you from above? The truth of the matter is that nothing good which we have is not a result of the mercy of God.

So, why if everything good which we have is a gift to us from God, then why do we boast as if what we have or that which we have accomplished is of our doing? Foolishness is what this shows. Yes, we should boast. But the boasting which we do should be in the Lord! We should boastfully acknowledge that all good we have is from God’s mercy and not from our doing. Only when we do this shall we speak the truth as to all good things which we have. The world needs to know the Truth. So, go ahead and boast, but boast only in the Lord!
