Rising From The Meal

so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. John 13:4 NIV

Why after rising form the meal did Jesus remove His outer garment and gird Himself with a towel?

His outer garment was seamless (refer to the distribution of His clothing by the guards at the crucifixion) which might have inhibited the washing of the feet which He was planning to do.

The girding of Himself with a towel was the reflection of Him performing the act of a servant. Remember that the disciples had at one point discussed amongst themselves which of them would be the greatest in the Kingdom. Jesus wanted them to know through His action and teaching that the greatest would be the one who served the many, not seeking glorification for themselves.
