When a tearful Joey watched his precious sailboat model drift away from him on the park lake, his big brother Jerry had a rescue plan. He quickly scooped up a handful of small stones then began hurtling them one by one at the tiny ship.

Eventually Joey saw Jerry’s purpose for as the stones plopped into the water beyond the ship, each created a miniature wave that rippled back against the model. These small billows caused the little ship to turn back and within minutes the ship had drifted back to Joey’s grasp.

Eventually a confused Joey saw a solution develop from a planned purpose, and it was the same for Joseph’s brothers as we see in our passage. They’d come to get help and were at first puzzled at a cold response from the Egyptian official, but then to their mystified surprise the man revealed himself as their long lost brother Joseph. Then they discovered that their whole experience was part of God’s plan to preserve his people

It’s often the same on my spiritual journey when I am confused at apparently purposeless events. However, I have an advantage when that happens because I know that since God has a plan for my life and these events are part of that. Which means that if I don’t understand what happens then he does and with that assurance I can continue serving him.
