Living Like a Christian, But Lost?

My name is Tim, and I grew up in a Christian home my whole life. Not only was my dad a preacher, but he eventually became a missionary to Germany. I made the proverbial profession of faith at the age of eight. I was a good kid. I rarely got into trouble. At the age of ten, I was baptized in Germany in the month of October in an outdoor swimming pool.

Before I turned 13, I surrendered to preach after a mission’s conference in Texas while with my dad. I decided I was going to work with him in Germany. Fast forward my freshman year of seminary school. Great time and I learned a lot, but something was wrong, and I just couldn’t put my finger on it. In my second year I dropped out and moved to be with my brother in Illinois.

This began the downward spiral. I mean drastic downward spiral. I was involved in things a good Christian should never be involved in. As things got worse, I decided to run from it all. I moved far away from everything. I cleaned up my act and started going to a good church in the new city where I lived.

I moved back to my hometown and would eventually get married to a young lady and take a church in North Dakota. The years went by and I eventually resigned that position and started a new church. Through all of this, the Lord was working in my heart.

Then came the year of conferences. I was at a conference earlier that year and was speaking to a lifelong friend of my salvation testimony. After speaking with him, I knew something I said didn’t add up. Next conference was the next month and I even preached at this conference, but something again was off. The Lord was really starting to work in my life. Then the next conference came, and a lady approached me and said that she was going to be visiting the area where our church was at and wondered if she could stop by. She did the next week. As she left, she handed me a tract of her personal testimony. I put it in my pocket. We were headed out that afternoon for the next conference. It was a 21-hour drive and we needed to get a head start.

At the hotel that night I took the tract out of my pocket and laid it on the nightstand. I picked it up and read it. The Holy Spirit pricked my heart. I felt like I was reading my own personal testimony. Everything that she was saying, I was going through. But, a lost preacher, come on.

Made it to the conference and on the first night at fellowship our sending church pastor, told us that the deacon of his church had just gotten saved. Now this struck me even further. The conference was great. But, wow, the Holy Spirit was really raking me over the coals.

The following Sunday was Father’s Day, and I preached a message on Are You A Godly Father?

I was preaching to myself really. I knew something was missing in my life. That night, the battle began. The Holy Spirit was dealing with my heart. I knew that I was lost and that I needed to be saved. Then there was the devil on the other shoulder whispering: what are the brethren going to say. You’re a pastor of a church. You’re fine.

The Holy Spirit wouldn’t let me go. I finally cried out in repentance and faith in God to save me from sins and to be my Saviour. Peace flooded my soul. I fell to sleep.

I woke up the next morning and wrote a letter to my wife to tell her. Flash forward years later. I eventually left that church after establishing and they called another pastor before I left. I am now senior pastor of a church in the Midwest and the Lord is truly blessing my life and the church. I thank the Lord for my salvation and that He kept after me.

I pray that this will be an encouragement to those that are out there wondering about their own salvation.

I John 5:13: These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
