TWO OR THREE WORD PRAYERS or FROM YOU TO GOD

            What is prayer?  Prayer is a two-way conversation with God.  You talk!  He talks!  If only you are the only who is talking, it becomes a monologue. You and I have met people who talk and talk and talk.  I remember once, when I was talking on the phone and I needed to go the bathroom.  I put down the phone and did my thing, came back and the person was still talking.  I know, I know, I should not have done that. Yes, I did wash my hands.

            Today, I would like to talk about short two-word prayers.  Prayer is “from you to God” or just talking to God.  Later we will talk about Prayer “from God to you”. 

The two-word prayer consists of a verb and a pronoun. Numerous examples of two word prayers are found in the book of Psalms.  Lead me, guide me, teach me protect me, heal me, fill me, forgive me, help me, hear me, etc.

            The first word in the two-word prayer consists of a verb requesting something from a person.  Although the Person is not mentioned, He is understood to be God, our Creator, Sustainer, Provider, Protector, Healer, Redeemer and Sovereign Lord.         

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is God’s child.  Everyone is created by God but not everyone is a child of God.  Later we will find out how to become a child of God   

If you want to learn how to pray, you must learn who God is

            The second word in the two-word prayer is the pronoun ‘me’.  Help me!  Heal me!  

Some teachers like, Dr. Charles Stanley, have even suggested to just call out the name, Father! or Jesus!, in time of trouble. When He comes, there is peace.

            In the simple two-word prayer, we release the desires of our heart.  If our heart is piilau, we release the same.  Answered prayer is related directly to our relationship with the Father.  A variation of the two-word prayer is to replace the “me” with the name of a friend, or the pronouns “him”, “her” or “them”.  Help John!  Help Mary!  Help him!  Help her! Help them.  If you have a prayer list, you can go through your list and replace the pronoun “me” with names of your friends.  If you do this, you have just become an intercessor or a prayer warrior.    

            After you have mastered the two-word prayer, you can expand or talk more in detail about the first word in the two-word prayer IE the verb request.   How specifically do you want God to grant your request?  You can elaborate in detail.  Psalm 51 is a prayer of repentance that explains specifically how David asked God to cleanse him from his sins.

            You can also elaborate why you or your friend needs help or healing.  We will discuss other ways to pray scripturally as well as learning more about the One who is answering your prayer.  I.E. our Creator, Sustainer, Provider, Protector, Healer, Redeemer and Sovereign Lord. 

            The following is a list of short prayers extracted from the Psalms.  I did a word search on the word “me” and extracted verbatim(quoted exactly in the KJV)  the short two word prayers that have a verb and a pronoun “me”.  The verb is the action that you want the Father to grant to you.  I also included some of the prayers that use the negative word “not”  IE don’t do this for me.  Some of the prayers are more than two words because additional words are needed to complete the sentence.  If you like, you can string a whole bunch of two word prayers as you pray.  It is not as important what you say but that your heart is right while you speak to One whom you are praying with.

Prayers consist of

            1. The Person you are talking to:  Heavenly Father”, “Lord Jesus”

            2.  The content:  Your request “the two word prayer or prayers ”Help me”, “comfort me”, etc.

            3.   It is very important that you close your prayer in the “name of Jesus”

If you learn to pray in secret to the audience of One, learn to put meaning to the words of your prayers you will have no problem praying in public..
