They were born in the early 1920’s surviving the great depression as a child. Times were hard with many struggles, but both persevered. In the summer of 1942, at the USO dance, hosted for the boys going off to war, he spotted the most beautiful girl he’d ever laid eyes on. Slowly, he walked over and asked her to dance.
Both were natural dancers and took over the dance floor with their jitterbug moves. They were quite the couple. After a few dances, they sat down to recoup and get to know one another, though it appeared they were a couple already.
“Hi, I’m Bud,” he said with a big grin. “I’m Lily. Pleased to meet you,” she responded. They talked until the last song was played, “You Are My Sunshine My Only Sunshine.” Everyone sang. It seemed Bud & Lily were singing from the heart as they gazed into each other’s eyes. When the song ended, it was time to say goodbye, but they promised to write to each other.
Bud saw the horrors of war but survived, unlike many of his friends. In 1946, he met up with his love once again. They were married in the little church that Lily had grown up in. Mission work was a big part of their lives. Remembering what it was like during the great depression, they taught their children to always help those in need, after all, Jesus said, “Feed My Sheep,” John 21:15-17.
Music was in their blood, so they opened a dance studio that was very successful; They also hosted USO events during the Korean Conflict. Every event brought back memories of the night they met. They made sure at the end of the evening, the song, “You Are My Sunshine,” would be played. They danced closely, just like the night they met, gazing into each other’s eyes.
One could see what God had in mind for marriage, when you saw them together. We each learned about true love from them. He was the head of the household but always treated her with love and adoration. She honored him with respect, devotion, and a loving heart.
Years together turned into decades and before long they were nearing 80 years old. “Where had the time gone?” grandpa wondered as he watched grandma sleep. She had fallen victim to dementia and could no longer remember names or do much for herself. I’m sure God was smiling from heaven as he watched grandpa take care of her with tenderness, dignity, and love. He never complained. Each night he sang, “I Want to Stroll Over Heaven with You Some Sweet Day,” and then end the night with, “You Are My Sunshine My Only Sunshine.”
One night as grandpa was singing, grandma joined in. She hadn’t spoken in quite some time and grandpa was elated! “Dance,” she said in a faint voice. He knew she couldn’t stand, but this was his sweetheart, and nothing would stop him from fulfilling her wish. With all the strength he could muster, he lifted her in his arms and swayed back and forth singing their love song. After two verses he gently laid her down…she smiled, then closed her eyes. Tears rolling down his face, he sang to her one last time:
“I Want to Stroll Over Heaven with You Some Sweet Day.” He never sang again. The music in grandpa’s heart died.
Five years had gone by when grandpa was nearing the end of his journey. He’d stopped talking and rarely opened his eyes. It was my turn to sit with him, so I read the bible aloud to bring him comfort:
“He Will Wipe Away Every Tear From Their Eyes, and Death Shall Be No More, Neither Shall There Be Mourning, Nor Crying, Nor Pain Anymore, for the Former Things Have Passed Away.” Revelations 21:4.
Glancing over, I saw his foot moving, like tapping to music. He held out his arms, looked up, and sang:
“You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine, You Make Me Happy When Skies Are Gray, You’ll Never Know Dear How Much I Love You, Please Don’t Take My Sunshine Away,” then closed his eyes for the last time.
I believe I witnessed God’s grace that day. Sweethearts from the start, I truly think Grandma was singing with him as she escorted him into heaven.
Reflecting on their precious love, I can picture them in heaven right now singing,
“I’m Going to Stroll Over Heaven with You…Now and Forever More.”
