“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV
Paul certainly had his fair share of hardships. At one point, he even admits that his sufferings were so great that he and his companions felt close to death (2 Corinthians 1:8-9). However, it was through suffering that Paul learnt where his true comfort came from: the “Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3). Not only is God able to bring sufficient comfort to all who are suffering, but his comfort also has a flow-on effect. As we experience God’s comfort in our troubles, we are then equipped to bring comfort to others around us who are in need. This is the reason why Paul and his companions could be a source of great comfort to the Corinthians and other churches that they ministered to.
It is often the case that believers who have gone through the hardest trials in life go on to become a great source of encouragement and inspiration to the church. I am sure that many of us can testify to the fact that because of some difficult season we endured in the past, we can now better understand and comfort those who are now experiencing trials of a similar kind. I remember many times during a difficult season when I have been comforted by an older believer who had learnt to trust in God and find comfort in him through their own times of trouble. Similarly, there were times when I was blessed with opportunities to be a channel of God’s comfort to others, because I had experienced similar hardships to them in the past.
As Christians, we must all face dark seasons of suffering. If God has blessed you with no hardships at the moment, you can be certain that more challenging times will eventually come. Whether we are currently in a difficult season or not, let us take heart that God is always with us and ready to bring us comfort in all of our struggles. May we learn to press into God more when the troubles begin to pile up around us. May we also pray that as God brings us the comfort we need, we would continue to be a blessing to others who are also suffering.
Lord God,
It is never pleasant to experience times of suffering. Although we would all rather avoid the difficult seasons of our lives, we thank you that these times can bring unexpected blessing. As we are overcome by our hardships, this brings an opportunity to draw closer to you in faith and experience more of your love and compassion for us. So Lord, continue to grant us your comfort for all of our troubles, no matter how overwhelming they may seem at the time. We also pray for opportunities in the future to extend this same comfort that you give us to other struggling brothers and sisters. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
