I heard someone say they believed God still speaks to us through dreams. I was unsure if that statement were true so I checked the Scriptures for myself. The Bible tells us that at one time, God spoke through the prophets, but since the resurrection, he speaks through his Son, Jesus Christ (Heb. 1:1-2). Christ hears revelation from the Father (John 12:49-50). Christ gives it to the Holy Spirit (John 16:14-15) who in turn gives it to us because the Holy Spirit knows all things about God (1 Cor. 2:10).

In the Old Testament, God spoke through dreams, but it was to and for select individuals:

1. Kings - Gen. 20:3,6; 1 Sam. 28:6,15;
1 Kings 3:5; Dan. 2:4-7,9,26

2. Rulers - Gen 4:5, 40:5, 8-9; 41:7; 42:9

3. Leaders - Gen 31:10-11; 35:7; Num. 12:6;
Judg. 7:13,15

4. Prophets - Deut. 13:1,3,5; Jer. 23:25, 27-28; 29:8

In the New Testament, the number of dreams diminishes at a fast rate (Matt. 1:20; 2:13,19,22; 27:19; Acts 2:17; Jude 8).

Observations:

1. Dreams in the Old Testament were primarily given to kings, ruler, leaders, and prophets.

2. Dreams in the New Testament were given as warnings and/or judgment.

3. Dreams directly or indirectly lead to new Scripture.

4. The need for dreams decreased as new Scripture was being written.

5. All members of the Trinity are involved in revelation through the word of God (John 17:17).

Conclusion:

God now speaks to us through his self-revelation to man - the Bible.
