“This book is about the Supreme Court. It’s about the critical cases before the Court and the imperative for us to defend our constitutional liberties.”
--Senator Ted Cruz, Author
“One Vote Away”
The dream of many a law school student is to argue a case before the highest court in the land, that being the United States Supreme Court in Washington, DC. Texas Senator and former presidential candidate Ted Cruz has ‘climbed the legal ladder’ so to speak. Not only had he managed to clerk for Chief Justice William Rehnquist during his formative legal years, Cruz also prepared and argued cases before the high court.
“One Vote Away: How a Single Supreme Court Seat Can Change History” (2020, 240 pages, Regnery Publishing) is Cruz’s written observations on SCOTUS, from both the inside and the outside. They are keen observations that the reader--and many future law students—will appreciate.
“One Vote Away” covers some of the behind-the-scenes discussion, debates and mechanics of the high court, background on key cases centering upon such topics as religious liberty, the abortion issue, gun rights and capital punishment. Cruz provides brief political commentary on each case along with a weaving in of some of the side legal issues involved in the major cases he explores.
Cruz, in addition to the legal cases, highlights the need—from a conservative point of view—for having the right types of justices selected for the high court, and for other federal court judicial positions. In his view, advocates wearing judicial robes do not do our constitutional republic much in the way of good in getting at true justice for the American people. Cruz fears that the high court is literally one vote away at all times of forgetting the Constitution, and true justice.
As the public and Washington politicians have observed, recent Senate confirmation hearings for the last three Supreme Court justices over the past few years may just bear out his views.
