So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.” John 11:41 NIV

So, did those who rolled away the stone do so because of the last comment of Jesus, or did they look to Martha and Mary for approval to go ahead and do so? We do not know, nor do we know if the ones who rolled away the stone were members of the extended family or just those who came to comfort the two sisters.

Notice first that Jesus looked up. He was looking to heaven, to where the Father resided, although the Father was also inside of the Lord. The Lord did not need to look up on His behalf but that those present might know that what was to be done was the will and the accomplishment of the Father through the Son. Do we spend time looking to this world for answers to our needs and desires, or do we look to the Lord? The Holy Spirit indwells us. Let us look to the Lord!

Secondly, the Lord thanked the Father. The Lord always thanked the Father for being with Him and directing Him in the message to be shared. How often do we truly thank the Lord for that which He does for us? Are we like the Samaritan leper who was the only one of the ten to return and thank the Lord for healing him? Let us always be thankful for everything which the Lord does for us! May we realize that without the Lord we really have nothing!
