It was a needed reminder the other day when I became enmeshed in a conversation with a lonely and isolated person that I would consider a friend. Yet I did not want to be in that conversation for long and was looking for a way to bail out of it as gracefully as possible. It wasn't going to happen. When I finally faced up to that and died to my own preference and my own schedule for that evening something remarkable happened. But in another sense it ought not to be so remarkable, because it is what God in His word promises will happen. New life, resurrection life was injected into that conversation and into that relationship. Suddenly I wanted to be there and was thriving on being there. That became the place I most wanted to be, and the person with whom I most wanted to talk at that moment. Days later my friend was still talking about how meaningful that conversation was to him. I let him know that it was meaningful to me also. I was finally functioning as a person who considers himself or herself a friend ought to function. Funny how that works. In dying we come to truly live. In those little daily dyings are little resurrections which foreshadow the big one to come.
