One Nation Under God
1 Samuel 16:7. 8
One Nation Under God... Those words are at the center of our pledge of allegiance. It was put in there to remind us that regardless of our nationality, language or origin of birth when we become a citizen of the United States we fall under that phrase. Yet in today's society the political climate is doing all it can to destroy that fact.
If we look back on our history we would see that what made us the United States was built on the diversity of our peoples. We took the best of each culture and incorporated it into the fabric of our nation. Sure we made some terrible mistakes along the way but a mistake only remains such if we fail to learn from it. That seems to be the sad situation we find ourselves in today. We are failing to turn our mistakes into lessons learned.
Somehow we have forgotten that it was the quality of character of people that forged our bonds. Today we appear to look on the outward appearances of others. Whether or not we have an acceptable accent in our speech, or the level of our education. If we were physically blind we would judge others by their character not their looks. Perhaps we need to become mentally sightless and put aside any prejudice or bigotry we have that truly makes us blind.
Reflect on the diversity of the founding fathers. Consider the fact that regardless of our outward looks we all bleed red blood and have many common threads in our DNA. God made us to be colorful and creative. A rose garden with its diversity of colors and scents is beautiful to behold. And though it is filled with varied species they are all roses. So too we are all humans... people with myriad diversity like the rose garden. Each of us is a divine original created to add to the one nation under God.
You have seen the ability of working as one nation under God when a crisis hits. That sense of community kicks in and we work as a team to releave the suffering of those affected disregarding the outward appearance. Why do we need crisis to bring us together that way? Let's build on the one nation under God and create the kind of country our founding fathers designed us to be.
All these things that went into making us one nation under God has all but been forgotten as many seek to gain or keep power. The thought process seems to have become 'what's in it for me' rather than what is best for us as a nation. This shatters the 'one nation' bond. We become
segregated communities that evolve into an attitude of us against them. There is so much to be gained by combining our differences to create a society that benefits the country as a whole.
One nation under God also calls us to remember that there is a higher authority than any culture, political group, government, or country. If we look back to the greatest successes in our history we would be well to remember that it was blessed and aided by that higher authority. When we continue to remove Him from our schools, government and homes we also remove His ability to work in our behalf. He gave us all free will and in doing so He limited His ability to intervene for us unless we invite Him to. Luckily there are those in our country that stand in the gap and pray for our leaders and country daily. It is those people that has tempered some of the horrible things we have endured.
One nation under God is the key to bringing us back to a United States of America. Yes we need to do our part to be good citizens, good neighbors and speak out against evil and injustice, but without prejudice or malice. Until we return to remembering we are all equal in God's sight we cannot hope to live as He desires.
