After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. John 11:11-13 NIV

People who are sick do not necessarily get better just because they sleep. I am sure that was also the situation in the time of our Lord walking this earth. So were the disciples just hoping for the best outcome for Lazarus if he was asleep? But of course we know that Lazarus was already dead and in the tomb. The disciples were still concerned about the potential danger they would face and wondering why the Lord would need to rouse Lazarus from slumber. They were about ready to be revealed to a little secret.
