Turbulent Times

‘They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was to happen to him.’ Mark 10:32 (NRSV)

Jesus’ words regarding future events must have caused turbulent emotions in the hearts of His disciples. Their beloved Lord and Teacher would be mocked, spat upon and flogged and condemned to death, and then Jesus said He would come back to life again. What words were these? Had their Master gone mad?

One moment they were amazed at what Jesus did and then in another, afraid and confused over what He said. I wonder, if in these changing circumstances, the disciples weren’t experiencing an inner crisis – reeling with uncertainty and instability.

Fast forward to today.  Perhaps we too are experiencing a time of turmoil and can empathize with the disciple’s inner confusion and fear. Sure and steadfast certainties in our life are rapidly shifting and changing before us and we are left despairing for certainties that we can depend upon. We feel like we have been thrust into a climate that is perpetually spiralling out of control.

Thank God that He is our God who never changes. He is the one sure and steadfast certainty in a very uncertain world. Only when He is the stronghold of our life, will fear be replaced with peace.

Can we take our anxious, fearful selves to the immovable Rock of our salvation and find refuge and rest in His everlasting presence? Our Lord longs to hide us in the shelter of His loving arms in these turbulent times.
