Before we seek out to please or love others we must first seek out to please and love ourselves. A relationship with ourselves begins with a commitment to a relationship with God. Anyone who loves themselves completely looks out for their own interest. If you have interest in yourself, and interest in your future you care about your destination on this earth and abroad. There is no one that can guarantee you life beyond the walks of this world, but God. There is no one who can grant you eternal happiness, but God. Yes, there are people who can make you smile for a moment and warm your heart for seconds at a time, but there is no one who can do it consistently like God.

Many people seek out relationships with other people when what they are truly seeking out is God. I know, because I have done it. In the end we often declare “oh, he just was not the one.” Well, of course he was not, because the one is “God.” There are marriages that fail because people look towards their spouses to be their saviors. In other words we often expect our spouses to fill the shoes of God, and of course they cannot. So, we declare, “the marriage is over, I am not happy.” You can never look to another human with the eyes that should be looking towards God. If so, you are blind and really need to seek the light of the word, God’s word. Our spouses are there to love and support us they are our teammates in life, not our saviors. We all know the usage of a toaster is to toast, so when we need our clothes ironed we do not reach for the toaster to do it, we reach for an iron. Why? Because a toaster can only do what it was manufactured to do, what it’s creator intended it to do, “toast.” The same holds true in relationships, we have to stop expecting of others the things we are to expect and establish with God. We cannot cast our burdens upon our spouses when they were not manufactured to hold our burdens or their own. God asked that we cast our cares upon Him. In doing this we learn to nurture and appreciate the people in our lives for what they are capable of granting to us, “love.”
