Cursed be the day on which I was born! The day when my mother bore me, let it not be blessed! Jeremiah 20:14 ESV
This is one of the most inappropriate Bible verses for mother's day! And yet in an old church I was at, the pastor was doing a series in Jeremiah, and happened to get to this point on mother's day! Before we condemn Jeremiah as a party pooper, let's try and put ourselves in his shoes.
Jeremiah's message to his wayward people was largely a message of judgement and condemnation. Death and destruction were on their way for the people of Judah. As a true prophet of Yahweh, and not some false prosperity preacher, Jeremiah wasn't going to sugarcoat Judah's impending doom.
Understandably, however, Jeremiah found his message of woe hard to deliver; and the people found it hard to receive. Jeremiah found the people's frosty reception of his words hard to take. In the context of this verse, he'd been beaten up and put in the stocks by his hostile audience.
Going back to that mother's day all those years ago, I was severely depressed myself, and wept through the service. But just as God would give Jeremiah words of hope, so He has filled me will hope, joy and peace. Healing is possible for depression.
'Dear Lord, thank You so much that when we hope in You, depression isn't our destiny. Please walk with us through the dark valleys of life, until You bring us into the sunshine of Your presence. For Your honour and praise, amen'
