By telling the Jews that He was not of this earth He was certainly alluding to the fact that He was deity, especially in light of the fact that He told them that they were of this earth, strictly human in nature. I am sure the Jews knew what Christ was inferring and just wanted Him to elaborate on it more so that He might say something more directly proclaiming to be the Messiah. They wanted the crowd to hear that which the Jews would interpret as being blasphemous.

Humans who deny Christ want to bring Him down to our level. Yes, he came to earth among us, but indeed he is not of this world. His ways are not our ways!
