(ROMANS 13:1-7) (I PETER 2:13-15)

“That day when evening came, He said to His disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took Him along, just as He was, in the boat. There were also other boats with Him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!” (Mark 4:35-41)
Do you remember that quaint sitcom TV series The Beverly Hillbillies? If so, you may also remember these lyrics from the series' theme song.
“You’re all invited back again to this locality
To have a heapin’ helpin’ of their hospitality.
Hillbilly, that is, sit a spell, take your shoes off.
Y’all come back now, y’hear?”
We all need rest from time to time, to simply sit a spell and take our shoes off. The President of the United States is no exception.
I understand our President, as a personal work habit, may only get three or four hours of sleep per night. However, setting such boundaries, even for the good of the country, can be very taxing on one’s health. Jesus Himself set boundaries, such as in our intro Scripture.
The Bible is quick to point out such examples of much-needed rest. For example, even our Savior, Jesus Christ needed a little human rest. For some unknown reason, and from a human standpoint, I can’t help but feel after the working of this miracle that our Lord may have simply laid back down for some much-needed human rest. You see, He was truly and properly God, and truly and properly man (Colossians 2:9) (Philippians 2:6-8), so even He got tired.
If even Jesus needed to stop and rest in the midst of a chaotic world with all of the important things He was to do, don’t you think we need rest, too? The most powerful government personality of the world, the American President needs rest from time to time.
Jesus seeing the vast crowd knew there was work to be done; people needed healing, demons had to be cast out, and most importantly, the Gospel needed to be preached. (I Corinthians 15:3-4)
We must heed our President's call to action, for patriotism, for freedom, for courage. And most of all, there is the need for honoring our founding fathers’ freedom documents and the inspired Word of God. (II Timothy 3:16)
It's always a little nerve wracking when we are taken back due to an unpredictable man-made or natural disaster. And there is the unexpected stress when someone, especially the leader of the free world, comes down with a serious illness or virus.
Even though we are not to give in to fear (II Timothy 1:7), our human nature sometimes tends to take over. Jesus’ own disciples were oftentimes fearful, as in the Scripture passage above.
Dr. Charles Ryrie explains the above Scripture this way, “they became very much afraid. The disciples were rebuked (v. 40) for having been timid, literally, “cowardly.” In (v. 41) the word afraid refers to reverential respectful awe for the Lord. In exclaiming, who then is this, they acknowledged that He was greater than they thought."
What about the President's need for medical care in his illness, one might ask? Well, history is quick to point out it happens to the best of divinely appointed leaders, especially when doing good for the betterment of the country.
We all know what happed to our Lord when the established civil and religious leaders perceived a loss of power over its citizens, and sensed the loss of their control over the populace.
Is it not time for us to set aside our political differences with those leaders who might not line exactly up with ours? We are all wonderfully made by God, in His likeness (Genesis 1:26-27), even though our personalities might not square off.
Is it not high time we all set aside a little daily quiet time and pray for our President’s health and his leadership along with America’s other influential government leaders?
Have you read your local newspaper lately, tuned into the television news, surfed the Internet, talked to your neighbor or even listened carefully in church? Then, you probably know what I mean. He, our President, more than any other president, is probably under stress that we cannot imagine.
Nonetheless, it is strictly evil generated and has nothing to do with him. The world, and our country, is now under an evil spiritual attack, an unseen war of many battles. (Ephesians 6:12) Again, Dr. Charles Ryrie puts it this way, “The believer’s enemies are the demonic hosts of Satan, always assembled for mortal combat."
However, above and beyond it all, our Creator God is still in control of this great country of ours. Nothing happens, including the outlook of our leaders, without our living God’s allowing it. (Daniel 2:19-23)
So come now, Mr. President, take your shoes off and sit a spell. Get some much-needed rest. Amen!
Author’s Postscript
So, what are you hearing? It’s easy to hear. One need only tune in the television or radio, pick up a local newspaper, visit the local library, surf the Internet, or talk to your neighbor across the back-yard fence. But are you hearing the truth?
Talk is cheap. The various information outlets oftentimes talk without saying a thing, make promises not kept, brag about exploits, will always tell you how to do something but never show up to help do it. You know you’ve heard it before, speech without action is useless.
Especially the closer we get to the most important election in America’s history. I have literally tuned out all the so-called fair and balanced news media outlets, in lieu of the Holy Scriptures.
You see, God has a vision for America and it will come to pass in due time. Will America ignore it at her peril, along with a danger, threat and risk? Tine will tell!
If America follows God’s plan, we will see an even more glorious life than we could ever envision. (II Chronicles 7:14) We must all pray for America, and its leaders. (Acts 26:19) Amen!
MAY GOD BLESS PRESIDENT TRUMP
