At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah?” John 7:25-26 NIV

The words Jesus had spoken were powerful enough that the crowd began to ask if He was not the one the Jewish leaders had been seeking to kill. Since He was not getting any insults hurled at Him here the crowd wondered if the Jewish leaders might have finally come to believe He was truly the Messiah. But such was not the case with the leaders. They just did not want to cause a disturbance within the crowd by taking action against Jesus in the presence of the crowd. The Jewish leaders sought the approval of man. They did not seek to fulfill the will of God.
