Why Did He Choose Him?

Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.) John 6:70-71 NIV

If Jesus knows everything, one might wonder why among the twelve He chose one who would betray Him. He did so that prophecy concerning His betrayal be fulfilled.

In Psalm 41:9 King David says “Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.” Although David himself had been betrayed as well, here he is guided by the Holy Spirit to speak of the betrayal of the Messiah.

In Zechariah 11:12-13 we read  “I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the Lord.”

Christ even foretells of His betrayal at the Last Supper, just prior to Judas leaving to set up the betrayal with the Jewish authorities.

Yes, Jesus chose His betrayer knowing that scripture must be fulfilled.
