“But when the right time came, God sent his Son …  God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because weare his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, ‘Abba, Father.’ Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child.And since you are his child, God has made you his heir” (Galatians 4:4-7).

From these verses, we see being adopted is connected with being an heir. The actual Greek phrase that Paul uses means that those who have been adopted have the full legal standing of an heir.

One of the blessings of being adopted is that we know God wants us. A person may have been unplanned in our economy, but they were never unplanned in God’s. From God’s perspective, none of us were unwanted or unexpected. God has no illegitimate children. We’re God’s unique creation, created for a relationship with him.

When you hear stories about orphanages, you hear about children being on their best behaviour in the hope of being adopted. Also, adopted children are often taught that they are specially chosen, whereas parents of biological children had no choice as to what sort of child they would get. But it was while we were still sinners God showed us his love for us by sending Christ to die for us (Romans 5:8). While we were sinners God wanted to adopt us. We don’t have to perform or achieve some standard of perfection, to be chosen by God.

God didn’t need us, but he wanted us.
