Lord God,

I thank you for the gift of your Spirit living in me,

I thank you that your Spirit continues to sanctify me,

And I look forward to the day when Jesus returns,

And I will be made perfect,

But until that day I continue to struggle with sin every day,

As I put to death my evil desires and all that belongs to my old self,

Lord, as I continue to pursue spiritual growth,

I pray that you would continue to empower me by your Spirit,

So that I would experience real victory over sin in my life,

And continue to advance your kingdom in the world,

Yet, so often I expect that your process of making me holy will happen overnight,

And I become disappointed when this doesn’t happen,

I confess that I am quick to lose heart when I don’t immediately experience spiritual growth,

And I still end up struggling with the same sinful habits that I pray about,

So remind me Lord, that even though you do sometimes bring instant change to our lives,

More often, sanctification by your Spirit takes place,

In small baby steps,

As I make the small daily choices,

To read my Bible and maintain my prayer habits,

Or to avoid joining into the gossip at work about my boss,

Or to keep doing the house chores even when I don’t get thanked for them,

Or to resist the urge to lose my temper in a morning traffic jam,

Although I don’t always feel the power of your Spirit in my life,

I am thankful that you are faithful to finish your work in me,

And even when I don’t notice the ways you are growing me daily,

I am thankful that over the span of months or years,

I am surely being made more and more like Jesus,

So please help me not to lose heart in the battle for holiness,

But strengthen me to persevere in being faithful in even the small things each day,

Knowing that your plan for my sanctification will not fail.
