7/11/2020 Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptist Pastor Ken “10 Commandments: You Shall Not Commit Adultery” Exodus 20:14, Matthew 5:27-28, John 8:3-11

The 7th commandment says thou shall not commit adultery and this commandment is for adults. This commandment does not give us specifics so we have to go to the other books of Moses. Leviticus 19:20 gives details of married couples, adultery done and the punishment of stoning to death. Both the man and woman in the adulterous act are to be stoned to death. Equal opportunity for both.
In Matthews 5:27-28 Jesus says you shall not commit adultery and if you look at a woman with lust then you have committed adultery in your heart. There is two parts to the act: Eye gate and Lust.

1)      Eye Gate:    This is where we see everything. In Genesis, Eve sees the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The serpent (devil) gets Eve to look at the fruit on the tree. The fruit is pleasant to her eyes. Eve sees, Eve takes, Eve eats the fruit and then she gives the fruit to her husband Adam. This act of disobedience all began at the eye gate.

2)      Lust:   There is good lust and there is bad lust. What are you doing when you look? Jesus said you are lusting and really want it or the other person. Jesus is talking about bad lust and you have committed adultery in your heart. Lust gives birth to Sin and Sin brings forth Death.

We must remember that there is Forgiveness. If we confess our sins, Jesus will forgive us. In John 8:3-11 there is a woman caught in adultery and she is brought to Jesus by the Jews. They state what the Law of Moses said to do and ask Jesus what He thinks. I ask….where is the man?  Doesn’t it take two to commit adultery? Jesus says “He who is without sin let him first cast a stone”. Then Jesus stoops to the ground and writes with his finger. We don’t know what He wrote on the ground but all those who accused the woman walked away. After they are all gone, Jesus tells the woman that He doesn’t condemn her and for her to go and sin no more.

The Law is there to say we are sinners but Jesus died for our Forgiveness. Jesus says for us to confess our sins and then go and sin no more. We have the Forgiveness from the Cross.

AMEN
