CONTENTMENT  by John Custer

“Rob, when was the last time you went to the ocean?” I asked.  Several couples were planning a small trip to the ocean, and we wanted Rob to go.

Although he lived rather close, Rob had never been to the ocean. As I talked to him, I realized why.  He was truly contented with the things and experiences that God had given him.  His attitude was so different from so many in our society. The more I thought about Rob, the more I realized that being contented is a quality that we should seek but few do. 

Later, when Rob was asked to go on a mission trip to Thailand, he said, “John, I haven’t crossed the Mississippi; and you want me to cross the Pacific?”  He eventually went, but later said he had no desire to go again.  Rob was truly contented. 

Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) states, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have…”

Several years ago I was caught in the eye of Cyclone Pam that ripped thru Vanuatu in the Pacific, leaving massive destruction on Efate Island where we lived.  After the storm, I walked thru the community and asked a man, “How did the storm impact you?”  

“Well, it took the roof off of my house, but I still have four walls,” he replied.  That attitude of contentment was very prevalent among the islanders.  Perhaps they have a quality that we lack. 

When you don’t have much, you’re forced to accept what you have.  However, when you acquire some wealth, it may be more difficult to be content with less.

“Lord, help me to strive to please you in all I do and be contented.”
