THE BOOK OF JOEL

Book Title: The Prophet of the Day of the Lord

Book Analysis:

The prophet Joel’s focus on only one subject. That is "The Day of The Lord". Although the book contains only three chapters, they contain three different ways in which “The Day of The Lord” is revealed.

Chapter 1, the description is giving of “The Day of The Lord” revealed to what we might call “natural disasters”. Things that happen often in the history of the nation of Israel. It is a backward look that causes them to focus on what happened in the past and how God worked.

The second chapter deals with the present. It reveals an army being mustered by God to perform a work designed primarily to bring Israel out of its backslidden condition.

Now, the third presentation is that of the future. It points to a time of God's final day of judgment as found in Revelation chapter 16, at the pouring out of the sixth bowl.

“The Day of The Lord”, refers to the time when God will act to deal with sin. It is not a time that Christians should pray for, rather it is a promise from God that His faithful ones will not have to experience that. With that, we will proceed with the outline and discussion questions.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Chapter One

1. How does the prophet Joel describe the condition of the land before him? Describe how this crisis affects the lands?

2 we are told that it is a condition sent by God. Can the God who sent it also able to cause it to stop? What are some reasons why God allows such conditions our way?

3. Joel refers to it as "the day of the Lord". What does this description of the day of the Lord convey to your mind? How does it differ from what we call "the Lord's day?"

4. What should be our response when difficult times arise? What are these leaders of the people told to do?

Chapter Two.

1. In verses 1-3, describe “the day of the Lord” as found in these verses.

2. In verses 4-11, describe the characteristics of this armory that God will send.

3. In verses 12-14, describe the purpose that God has in mind in sending this armory?

4. From verses 15-32, what promise is given to those who respond positively to this day of the Lord?

5. In verses 28-32, how do these verses refer to our future time? See Acts chapter 2: 16-21.

CHAPTER THREE

1. To what period in the future does this battle refer? (See Revelation chapter 16:12-16.

2. For whom is this day of the Lord reserved? (See verses 11-14)

3. What comfort and hope to the people of God have during this period? (See verses 17-21) according to these verses, do those who are the children of God ever need to fear that time called "the day of the Lord?" Who does need to fear?
