Marriage
I remember back in grade school when part of our English class was learning to diagram sentences, and for some reason, this process really appealed to me.... I loved drawing the lines with red pencil, making geometric designs on the paper. Doing the actual diagramming twice - first done in pencil as practice, to make sure it was right, and then the 'real' work was copied to fresh paper, done in red pencil and ink.
I loved figuring out what word went where, whether on a straight red line, or the ones slanting up or down - it was like a small road map of the sentence, and I was like the explorer, seeing where it would lead.
Somewhere along my journey in life, things got all jumbled up, and instead of the sentences being easy to figure out, I got lost and all tangled up. The words were all there, all lined up in a row, but they didn't make any sense - I had lost the structure, my red pencil was gone, I could not find my way.
My nice neat diagram became a confusing mess, and I had no way to fix it, I simply didn't know what to do. I tried this plan, then that one, all with the same result, I had too many words that didn't fit on my lines, my plan had just gone awry, I finally turned to Jesus, with tears in my heart, and asked Him could He fix it, would He try?
I could almost feel Him smiling, as He took me in hand, and sat me down to learn at His feet...and He threw out my old papers, wiped the tears from my eyes, and showed me it wasn't 'fixing' that He'd do. Instead He'd just start over, with nothing from the past, from this day on, I would be brand new.... and on this fresh new heart, He made a new diagram, one that made sense from the very start...a single red line He drew.
And on this line was a subject, verb and an object.... and suddenly I knew - the most important thing to learn was that the subject was the least of the three, the other two were all about Him, and showed me what to do.... the verb was 'follow' and the object was 'Me', meaning Him.
Ah, but He wasn't done, He blessed me even more, and added a new red line to my diagram...instead of one subject line at the start, He'd erased that and made it into two. And into my life he brought a brand new love to share this new life in Him.... and on this line He wrote the name Lucian, and my heart was full to the brim...He knew just what I'd needed, and then He gave me more.... He gave me the desire of my heart.... He’d made me whole, and then He gave me you, and our sum is so much more than the parts.
And I look and see with a joyful heart, my diagram has changed yet again.... it’s no longer in pencil, my practice is done, it's now the real thing, writ in red pencil and ink!
