Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. John 4:36 NIV

Who are the sower and the reaper, and what is the wage drawn, and what is the harvest?

Let’s deal first with the sower and reaper. The sower is Jesus Christ himself, the Word and the Truth, the One and only way to salvation. In the time of Christ, the reapers were the disciples. Today, we who are believers in Christ are the reapers as we go into the fields looking to work on the harvest. We will find weeds and chaff while working. These are the ones who belong to the evil one, and as we have heard elsewhere from Christ, they shall be burned in unquenchable fire.

The harvest is souls which are being won over to Jesus Christ, thus the harvest is the crop for eternal life. Eternal life can only be received through belief in Jesus Christ, through belonging to Him.

So, what is the wage drawn by the reaper? It is the joy of knowing that souls are being won to Jesus Christ. We are participating in people receiving Jesus Christ and that which comes through belief in Him. What greater joy can there be than seeing someone come to Christ, to see them saved? We can then rejoice with our Lord in the fact that one more soul has found the Truth, and that this soul shall spend eternity in the presence of the King of Kings!
