Men
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on and are punished.
Proverbs 22:3; 27:12
There have been a wide variety of words that we don’t hear about, nor see cited in many of our modern publications. However, I am of the opinion that if some of these words would make a ‘comeback’, I believe that our ‘snowflake’ social media would be reformed and our younger generations would be shaken out of their moral free fall.
Here’s one word that comes off of the top of the deck with me…that word is ‘class’. The best street definition of the word means ‘the way in which one reflects, or carries themselves at home or in open society, based upon their upbringing, moral/spiritual training, social status, common sense and manners’. A classy person knows how to treat the weaker sex, knows the proper social graces, and carries an air of excellence in all that they seek to accomplish.
Another word that I will mention is one which will occupy the bulk of my column. That word is ‘prudent’. Keep in mind that a truly prudent person is a Christian. Webster’s Dictionary has several meanings listed. The first is: Handling practical matters judiciously. The second: Managing carefully: provident. Lastly: Behaving circumspectly: discreet. A prudent person--from a biblical perspective--is one who has those previously mentioned qualities and KNOWS how to apply them on a regular basis.
A prudent man, if I may be so bold, is a Christian man. Why? Because God does not bless those who are walking in wicked paths (Proverbs 13:13). Heavenly wisdom and understanding COMES from above, and is reserved for those who are walking WITH their God (Micah 6:8 KJV).
In the Book of Proverbs, the word ‘prudent’ is found no less than 12 times. In one key verse, the word is applied to the type of wife that God gives a man (Proverbs 19:14). Thus, before a Christian man engages in marrying the woman of his dreams, she not only must be saved--a fellow Christian (II Cor. 6:14)--it is hoped that the woman is from the Lord. A prudent woman is a mark of blessing, not a shortcoming, to her future husband.
Further in Proverbs, we find two verses using the word ‘prudent’ in Chapters 22 and 27. When a verse is cited in the KJV Bible more than once--especially word for word--there is special significance. God is making a major point which the reader should capture. In these two uses of the word ‘prudent’, the verses clearly signify that the prudent man has heavenly sense to see approaching danger, and hides himself from it, thus safely avoiding for his OWN safety AND the safety of his house.
Great example of this comes from one of my favorite flicks from 1956: “The Ten Commandments”, which had Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner in leading roles. In the movie, there was a passage which depicted the creation of the ‘Passover’. God told his people to paint the lintels of their doorway with the blood of a lamb, signifying God’s protection from the pestilence; the last plague that was coming down against the Egyptians. Joshua, played by John Derek, is seen making his way through Goshen and finally arriving to Moses’ home. Joshua hold the door of the house open, inviting those inside to see the coming pestilence.
Moses--instead--told Joshua to enter the house and “To let death pass.” He told Joshua to close the door! Moses was a prudent man and a Man of God. He had enough sense to know when to hide himself from an obviously dangerous situation--God’s wrath against the Egyptians--and when to take an open stand for the Lord. Again, let me state for the record that Moses was ‘a prudent man’ (Proverbs 22:3; 27:12 KJV).
We are seeing those who are ‘chiding’ the church, and Christians who have taken the proper precautions to shelter in place during this pestilence known as the Wuhan Virus. Many of the critics are not Christians… but a few of them are. One would be foolish NOT to take the proper precautions prescribed by elected officials. Yes, God can heal; but if one knows that they are in a high risk group, it would be foolish to tempt God, and violate the laws of man (Romans, Chapter 13). While the church may be closed, God’s Word is always open. The church is NOT just a building, but is the people.
People should have enough heavenly sense to take the proper precautions, and exercise heavenly wisdom in order to let danger bypass them, when they can see it coming down the street. Now, I do love my church and my Pastor. However, I won’t be attending regular services until this pestilence passes and the all clear is sounded. I have enough sense to obey the law, and send in my tithes and offerings and catch services either on the Internet, or from my Bible. Let the hard-heads bark on and DIE in their sin of rebellion. Read the first Psalm or the Book of Nehemiah if you need a crash course in godly obedience in the face of satanic taunts, threats and opposition.
There are those who may laugh at the prudent man. In reality, it will the prudent men and women who will be in the best positions to come back out into society once this pestilence passes over our land. Some of us have been in our secret place with the Lord over the past few years; getting instructions and warnings off the main line. Now is merely the time for us to do as Moses spoke to Joshua: “Close the door, and let death pass.” The blood will protect those who are prudent, and belong to God in Christ Jesus.
