"Be still and know that I am God" Psalm 46:10
While this may be a favorite quoted verse in scriptures, it is misinterpreted to mean finding a place of rest in God. Although it is important to pace ourselves and rest during hectic schedules, meetings, serving, and the various issues needing to be addressed, this verse is not about relaxing.
The words 'Be still' were written in the context of a time of trouble and war; therefore, we should consider the verse with that context in mind. Like any other text, we want to be familiar with its background, including cultural implications and historical references.
The best words found in the English language that interprets the meaning of 'Be still' are to "cease striving" or to "stop fighting," which was directed toward the people of God as they warred fearing their enemies.
What are you battling and warring with today?
The people of God should interpret 'Be Still' as acknowledging who God is and being in reverence of Him. God is speaking to his people today to 'awaken' them to 'snap' out of fighting against an enemy or resisting God through struggling.
In biblical days the people of God were at war and full of fear and worry and anxiety.
If we read the beginning of Psalm 46:1-2, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea," we discover God is our place of protection and safety.
God addressed the fears and anxieties of His people in those biblical days just as He addresses ours today. God speaks life during our struggling against emotions and warring against what we want; in our present confinement.
God reveals Himself to us today and reminds us He is not confined in walls or a building. We can come to Him right now, right where we are, and His love holds, embraces, and enters all we experience.
He is always our source of protection and strength during times of uncertainly. God is still our source in the unfamiliar days, such as we are living now.
We are no different than the people of faith who lived in biblical times when we neglect to call upon our God as our source of help in our time of need.
God is still the same Lord who invites us to come to Him ----- all who are weary, burdened, overwhelmed, fearful, restless ------, and enter His provision and refuge. For the people whose hope is in God, we know He alone is our protector and the sovereign ruler.
We as His people find refuge in His presence as our sacred dwelling place. Our fear and worry do not hinder his actions and activity.
God is God alone, and he will protect those who believe in his name and trust in him. The protection He offers us is that when we stop striving against emotions, cease struggling in what we want as a result, and rest from resisting His leading ----, we are embraced in divine holiness.
When we stop and acknowledge God as our Lord, we are reminded --- His unchanging grace abounds!
His Word tells us who he is and whose we are.
God calls us to behold Him --- worshiping and praising. We can remember who God is, and that He remains faithful and in control.
Focusing and turning our attention towards God to see what He is doing helps us maintain perspective on His purposes.
When we quiet our minds and heart in acknowledging his greatness, we can be confident and secure that our God is with us in each moment of each day!
