A Different Perspective on the Role of the United States in the End Times

The coronavirus pandemic has thankfully brought new life to the study of eschatology and whether or not COVID-19 plays a role in the start of the tribulation or just represents a taste of what’s to come.

My own study into the End Times picked up substantially in the last year or so bringing me to the oft asked question of, “What happens to the United States during the tribulation?” This “debate” (it’s not debated all that much, just hypothesized) has been around for decades especially for those of us who live in America. After listening to countless sermons on the rapture, tribulation and End Times as well as reading a couple of books, I began to wonder if the United States will even survive the first half of the tribulation and thus I suggest the United States, North America and perhaps even our side of planet earth gets wiped out completely.

I am not dogmatic about this idea but hear me out.

The tribulation begins shortly after the rapture of the church therefore all Christians will be spared the events outlined in Revelation. How many people get snatched up (or caught up) is anyone’s guess but for my argument this doesn’t matter. Billions of people will remain during the time of Jacob’s trouble including millions still in the United States. But that’s about to change.

You see the tribulation is about the redemption of Israel and all things point to Israel. The tribulation affects all countries, but as time comes to a close all eyes focus on Israel. Those who remain in the United States will have some very distressing times ahead as the seal judgements take place.

Seal Judgements

The seal judgements as noted in the early part of Revelation, and arguably the first half of the tribulation, indicate worldwide death through famine, pestilence, mass murder and a massive earthquake.

Trumpet Judgements

But the trumpet judgments that start in Chapter 8 could be isolated to regions of the world.

• Trumpet 1 brings hail, fire and blood from the sky killing a third of the vegetation and all of the earth’s grass. (Rev. 8:7)


• Trumpet 2 drops a fiery looking mountain into the sea destroying a third of ocean life and a third of the ships on the sea. (Rev. 8:8-9)


• Trumpet 3 brings a blazing star from the heavens which poisons a third of the world’s water. (Rev. 8:10-11)


• Trumpet 6 unleashes four bound angels to kill a third of mankind via plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur. (Rev. 9:15, 18)

All of this results in the death of many people. But the Bible doesn’t say specifically, for example, that one out of every three fish in the ocean die, just that a third of ocean life will die. This means if only the fish swimming in the Pacific Ocean get wiped out, that could represent a third of the ocean life. If all the ships on the Atlantic Ocean sink, that could represent a third of all ships. You get the picture.

Perhaps then, as the tribulation moves forward, an angel of death, if you will, moves across the land towards the final battle that takes place nowhere near North America methodically wiping out individual continents.

If the trumpets as described in Revelation target the northern and western hemispheres and the southern and western hemispheres these judgements can easily mark for death those living in North, Central and South America ONLY as events move closer to the middle east and Israel.

Moreover, those not killed by the four angels still did not repent of their evil ways (Rev. 9:20). This gives credence to one section of the earth witnessing these events happening in real time - thanks to the 24 hour news cycle and internet - to other people (ahh, that’s not going to happen here!) rather than watching a third of your neighborhood get killed off.

Bowl Judgements

The seven bowl judgements as written in Revelation 16 begin to wipe out everything else. The second bowl turns all the oceans into blood and kills everything in the sea and the third bowl does the same to the rivers and springs of water. (Rev. 16:3-4)

Finally, the United States also houses several dormant potential natural disasters waiting to unleash their fury which could help usher in the fourth trumpet that darkens a third of the sun, moon and stars.

The length of the West Coast from Southern California to Seattle, WA could melt into the sea if the predicted earthquake(s) strike. Geologists consider Yellowstone a super volcano and if that region of the United States erupts in spectacular fashion the entirety of the Pacific Northwest, at a minimum, would likely cease to exist. And, depending on which way the wind blows, if the West Coast has succumbed into the ocean, Yellowstone therefore could have far reaching effects eastward.

All of this, just a thought on how the United States fares through the End Times.
