Though in the wording it might appear to be, but Christ is not really surprised by Nicodemus’ lack of understanding, for Christ knows the ways and thoughts of each human.
His comment to Nicodemus, I also do not take to be disrespectful or degrading. I think of it more as a “wake-up” call to a Jewish religious leader. He wants the man to know that He is missing the point as to what is required to truly commune with God.
Have you ever received from Christ that which you would consider a “wake-up” call? How did it make you feel, and what did you do? Consider it a blessing that the Truth is spoken to you.
