You may threaten to leave me after many years of commitment and devotion.
You may say cruel things to rip through the very center of my emotions.
You may go without speaking to me for days.
You may promise to hate and despise for always.
You may do all you can to bring, tear, push and put me down.
You may make a vow to never again come around.
You may falsely accuse me and scandalize my name,
And our relationship may never ever be the same.
You may talk about me and even curse me,
And call me everything that you think I should be.
You may hate the very thought of my presence.
You may promise to do all you can to assure I live as a peasant.
You may pull all kinds of strings to make me lose my job and respect from others.
You may do all you can to win the support of my parents, sisters and brothers.
You may try do whatever is necessary to cause me physical harm,
And you may do all you can to make others treat me cruel instead of kind and warm.
You can kill this old body and lay it in the cold, cold ground,
But that can’t shake the peace I’ve found
In knowing that it’s better you be angry than God
Because your efforts will never hurt like the strikes of His chastening rod.
So I promise to do right regardless of the cost
Because I don’t want my blessings or my soul to be lost.
So, you can hate and despise me, and on my emotions, you can trod,
But the fact remains that it’s better you than God.
