Peter and John were sent from their church headquarters in Jerusalem to investigate reports of an outbreak of conversions in Samaria. It seems that a man by the name of Philip, who was a deacon at one of the “cell” groups in Jerusalem (Acts 6:3-6), had taken it upon himself to share the Gospel in Samaria. The result of his evangelistic outreach swept the city. Upon arriving in Samaria Peter and John prayed over the new Believers and laid hands on them to receive the Holy Spirit. The Scriptures state that they then returned to Jerusalem preaching the Gospel in many of the villages of the Samaritans. (Acts 8:25) What are needed today are people like Philip who dare to extend their church duties to reaching people for Jesus. Many times we say that the congregation reflects the pulpit. What about the pulpit reflecting the people? One of the things that energize a pastor is seeing his flock carrying the Gospel outside the walls of the church. Philip was elected to “wait” tables, but there was something greater stirring within him and that was to share the Gospel. It is important to hold positions of trust within the church, but it will never compare with getting people outside of the church to trust in Jesus.
So much of our church activities are keyed to our enclosed conclave of Believers. The majority of church budgets are centered around self-sustainment. No expense is spared to display the exaggerated status of the church’s community presence. Philip fulfilled his church obligation while at the same time fulfilling the call to spread the Gospel. Those who hold positional authority should always be on guard that their position does not blind them to the needs of those outside of the Church. (Ref. Acts 8:4-25)
