One morning I got out of bed and fell flat on my face. It wasn’t an act of worship or godly submission; I tripped over the blankets and literally fell on my face! My poor husband was startled out of his sleep—but once he realized I wasn’t injured, he chuckled.  He actually laughed!

I started considering the meaning behind my “fall.”  I thought of all the times in the Bible when God’s people fell prostrate before him. “When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, ‘The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!’” (1 Kings 18:39 NIV)

I realized that even though I talk to God every day—many times I’m just squeezing Him into my already busy schedule. Yet a few years ago at a women’s retreat I actually knelt down on my knees to pray for the first time in years. Throughout the course of the prayer time, I ended up flat on my face. The amazing thing is that the lower I got, the closer I felt to the Lord. Lyrics from and old song “Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord” came to my mind.

God wants to have an intimate relationship with us. When we fall flat on our faces in our jobs, fail as parents, or in our marriages—and even when life is going great—He is waiting for us to fall flat on our faces before Him. Only in Him can we find true comfort, joy, and peace. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, shall guard our hearts and minds in Jesus Christ” (Philippians 4:7 NIV).
