Now the Pharisees who had been sent questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John 1:24-25 NIV

It is evident that either the Pharisees were not familiar with Isaiah 40 or did not understand the purpose of the Messiah’s forerunner. They wanted an answer which was suitable in their eyes to take to those who had sent them.

The ones sent to question John as to who he was were not blindfolded (except for spiritually), yet they seemed to have no idea as to who this man of God was. After receiving no response to him being Elijah or the Prophet, they gave up and just asked him what he had to say about himself?

Again, we see here that the responses of John are so much different to how people might respond today. Too many are much to eager to speak about who they are and what they do than to focus upon who the Lord is and what He has done for each of us. May our line be the sharing of the Good News with others, the focus being on Christ and not ourselves!
