“Him God raised up the third day, and showed Him openly; not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God…..” Acts 10:40-41
Welcome to this edition of The Awakening Call.
In his sermon to the Gentiles in Acts 10:34-43, Apostle Peter speaks of God’s intentional election of those He chose to show the risen Lord. Verses 40-41 states that God:
“…showed Him openly; not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God…..”
In this, we know and understand that one of the key reasons why God has allowed you and I to ‘see’ Jesus well enough to have been able to receive Him as Lord and Saviour is so that we might become witnesses of His life, purpose, death and resurrection.
Indeed in verse 42, he explains exactly what God’s election of us as witnesses entails:
“And He commanded us to {1} preach unto the people, {2} …to testify that it is He which was ordained of God to be the judge of the quick and the death. {3}… that through His name whosoever believeth in Him shall receive remission of sins”
Predestined and commanded by God, we must rise up to sincerely and actively become faithful witnesses of Jesus.
From personal experience, I know that this can sometimes be a struggle for even those whose heart long for it. But neither our feelings of inadequacy nor the lack of resources must be allowed to disengage our hearts or commitment to God’s commandment to be witnesses. Just as we fight to ensure we put food on the table and a shelter over our families, we must fight the more to overcome every challenge or obstacle to our being witnesses knowing that the eternal destinies of millions of soul are at stake and that many stand the risk of being separated from God in eternity if we keep silent.
And God who has commanded us to do this has also made provision to equip us with the power to do so. In Acts 1:8, Jesus said:
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
Here, we see that the primary reason the Holy Spirit is given is so we can be His witnesses to the uttermost part of the earth.
Our longing to see souls saved and restored back to God may draw us deeper into intercession, but as Romans 10:14 states:
“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”
To as many as God has indeed allowed to ‘see’ Jesus, I say preach unto the people! Keep not silent! You were chosen of God to be a witness and because we know that in God there are no errors of judgement, we can be confident that our election by God is a just and righteous one.
If need be:
1.fervently, knowing that there is no alternative source of grace and power, separate time to seek the Lord asking for power, utterance and opportunities to preach Christ and win souls;
2.sign up to take a course on how to witness to the unsaved;
3.study the lives and ministry of great evangelists – past and present;
4.buy books from faithful fathers of the faith on evangelism;
5.find other believers who like you have a longing to preach Christ and without unnecessary formalities just pick a time to pray together (prayer is a strong foundation for successful evangelism and many of the resistance that you might otherwise face are usually overcome on the altar of prayer) and we know that there is strength in numbers;
6.find organizations who give free tracts – ensure that you always have tracts in your bag- they are a great way to engage someone in conversation and you never know when the Holy Spirit will nudge your spirit to share the gospel;
7.Sow a day of fasting each week to intercede for souls to be saved;
8.Support missionaries on the field – many of whom are in distress despite the great sacrifice they made to go to where many of us will not survive a night.
And if you have not been baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit, please find a Bible believing and Spirit-filled church and let them know you wish to be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
Remember, you were chosen by God to be a witness! God is depending on you to give the lost an opportunity to be reconciled to and spend eternity with Him!
Shalom!
