2/15/2020 Seventh Day Baptist Edgewater Pastor Keith “Not Fair You See” John 8:1-11

The worst thing you can call someone in the church is a Pharisee. Jesus often talked bad about the Pharisees and He said don’t be like a Pharisee. In our text today, the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery to Jesus. Jesus said whoever did not have sin to be the one to cast a stone at her. All the Pharisees left one by one until just the woman was left alone. Jesus told her to go and sin no more.

The Pharisees started out trying to please God by keeping God’s commandments and teaching the people to obey them.  The Pharisees also created new commands to add to what God had said. They added to God’s rules. Some of their commands were disobedient to God’s will. The Pharisees became self-righteous in their thinking and their rules became more important than the people. They didn’t care about the woman. They just brought her to test Jesus. AND…..where was the man she was caught with? There has to be TWO to do adultery! The woman was just a prop to trap Jesus!!

The Pharisees believed that they had Jesus in a pickle. If Jesus said the woman should be stoned, they could run to the Romans and tell them what Jesus said.  This is because only Romans could stone/execute people because Jerusalem was under Roman rule. If a person begins to love the rules more than the people, then they are becoming a Pharisee. Again….if you love the rules more than the people then you are becoming a Pharisee! Without love you have nothing. Everything hinges on Love. Show the Love of Jesus to ALL!!

After all the Pharisees had left, Jesus asked the woman where were all her accusers.  She said they were gone and Jesus said He would not condemn her. Jesus told her to go and sin no more. Jesus didn’t come into the world to condemn us for our sins but He came to take on the sins of the world for us. We have died to sin through Jesus and are baptized in His death. We must come to Jesus with repentance and choose to turn away from our sinful past. Jesus came to save us from our sins. We are to put off the old sinful man and put on the new man. We are born again and redeemed through the blood of Jesus! Don’t be like a Pharisee but be like JESUS!!

AMEN
