Teaching in Love

Jesus did not pontificate. Nor was he primarily the lecturing type. He taught as he spoke as he acted, that is, in love. And love can be stern when it needs to be.  He taught relationally, spontaneously, conversationally, and contextually. We, too, may do some of our best teaching and learning when we are not necessarily trying or intending to teach or learn at all.

I agree that your statements covers one type of teaching and it is one that is "caught," we often say, "not taught." That is sort of Relational Learning, by example.

However, IF you think about it, "teaching" covers many situations and for many purposes.

For instance, to sit under a "not trying to teach" professor of Bible would be a waste of time, effort, and money. The same would be true of sitting in a Language Class trying to learn how to write a foreign language, and many other examples.

I think also that your description of good teaching does not give a place to the God given Office of a Teacher. God gifted and ordained by God Teachers DO get into the nitty gritty of the Scriptures and teach everything that is there, "line upon line, precept upon precept."

They are to do that for the education of the followers of Jesus, so that they know HOW to walk in right paths.

I also understand that our culture has for, really longer than most people have been living, trained us that forthright speaking is offensive. Hear the Prophets, not to gentle.

I agree with you that Jesus used a method of teaching that engaged the student's mind. He asked a lot of questions and encouraged discussion.

I disagree that Jesus was always soft spoken. He talked about sin and sins and Heaven AND HELL.
