For Baby Boomers, childhood memories of Christmas often revolve around the tree and its ornaments and other decorations as much as they do of a specific present. In the late 30’s, F.W. Woolworth was the largest seller of Christmas ornaments in the country. Ornaments are often family collections of commercially produced ornaments and decorations created by family members.
The first decorated trees were adorned with apples, white candy canes and pastries in the shapes of stars, hearts, and flowers. Glass trinkets were first made in Germany in the 16th century as garlands of glass beads and tin figures that could be hung on trees. The popularity of these decorations grew into the production of glass figures made by highly skilled artisans with clay molds. The original ornaments were only in the shape of fruits and nuts.
Most would agree that there are a lot of fruits and nuts hanging around Christmas trees these days trying to get your attention. Rather than being “plastic”, at Christmas, let’s be a proper ornament for the King of Kings and reflect the Reason for the Season not only to our families but those around us.
