Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. Mark 6:7-13 NIV
Why did Christ give the particular instructions here to His disciples as He sent them out? There may be many reasons, but there are two of importance which I wish to address here. They are as important to us today as they were to the twelve men whom Jesus chose as His disciples. First, Jesus wanted the disciples then, as well as us, His believers today to remain focused on sharing the message of the Good News, and to not be distracted by earthly things. They and we should not be focused on money spending and what we are to eat or wear. We are to focus on sharing God’s word. There are an abundance of lost souls that need to be directed to Jesus Christ, and we must plant the seed, just as the original twelve disciples did when they went out two by two. Secondly, Jesus wanted the disciples then, as well as us today to rely upon God for the provisions needed. If we have an abundance and rely upon self, how can we expect to grow in reliance for what we truly need? God takes care of those who belong to Him. As we do His work He provides for our needs. Our love and devotion for God shall increase as we learn to let go and let Him provide. What a burden removed from us. Believe that God will provide all you truly need!
