Jesus Blesses Little Children

‘People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it.’ Luke 18:15 (NRSV)

As a school chaplain, I see first-hand parental neglect. Children who come to school with inadequate food, underdressed for cold winter days and hungry for love and attention. Neglect of children, who have no strong voice to defend themselves, makes me both mad and incredibly sad. Children are no less equal in God’s eyes, but often they are treated that way.

Jesus opened His heart and His arms to welcome and bless children. Unfortunately, however, His disciples did not. The disciples may have felt Jesus had more important work to do, so they brushed the children aside. Perhaps they believed children were not worth paying attention to. Today that attitude is called neglect.

Jesus sets the right example here. No child is unimportant. His invitation that says ‘let the little children come to me’ and His warm embrace defies a cultural belief that children are insignificant and not worth investing in. Every one of us is called to be a chaplain to children: to let them know they are welcome and worthwhile, to listen to their stories, to show them the unconditional love of our Saviour and above all, share with them the greatest story of redemption ever told.

‘Lord, show me what part I can play in welcoming children into your Kingdom, just as Jesus did. Forgive me for those times I have not offered children the same love that every person deserves no matter their age. Amen.’

Moving indeed. The state of mankind is what it is, but children seem to be the ones who pay the price for being born to those unfit to be parents.

Even in my little city, parental neglect has turned deadly, such as the young couple who set their infant boy into his auto-swing and shut the door to a small room where he was situated and then left their unwanted and unloved chid to die of thirst. His death was to have made their love relationship like it was before "parenthood". Now they lead separate lives until their sentences of incarceration are complete. The neighbors and the neighborhood that never talked nor cared for each other, the system that did not see the red flags, and the greater family members of this child all let him down because of how they value their children.

As Jennifer has said, we need to see the neglect or abuse of children as being a problem that is not distant to us and one that should prompt us to place much higher value upon the lives of our children collectively and greater focus on their well being.

There is a quote that sums these things up: "There is no footprint too small to leave it's imprint upon this world." .. Unknown.

We are children of God. We must treat each child as God's unique creation. Thanks for the share. God bless you!

"Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future" .. President John Kennedy, 7/25/63.
This writer has that same kind of clear eye, mind and heart in this age, and assesses the responsibility as belonging to all of us to look to the children. Excellent and moving.
