“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.” Mark 2:21-22 NIV

How can the word of God be poured into the sinful heart which will not repent? How can the flavor of God’s word be savored by the old heart, the one that continues to live in sin, blind to that which is forthcoming? The unrepentant heart will just let the word of God pass over it without any acknowledgement.

The sinful heart must undergo a change in order that the message of God’s word be received. One must realize that they are totally lost and bankrupt without the Lord. The old heart must realize that it’s sinful nature will lead to total destruction without a change. The old heart is like an old wineskin. It cannot receive the new wine of God’s word. The old heart must be reborn. It must become like a new wineskin. Within this new wineskin, the new wine, the word of God can remain, growing within the new wineskin, as the new wine (the word of God) is savored by the believer.

I pray that your heart is like the new wineskin. The new wine, the word of God, is offered to all. May our wineskins be new, that we might eagerly accept the new wine offered by God.
