Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. Mark 2:13-14 NIV
Once again we find our Lord along the sea, this time teaching the multitudes who had come out to Him. Then He starts walking and sees Matthew, the tax collector, sitting at His tax booth. Jesus immediately calls to him, telling him to follow. Notice that our Lord did not engage in lengthy conversations before asking those He chose to be His disciples. All He said to them was to follow Him, and so that they did.
Just as Jesus called to His disciples those many years ago, so today He calls to us to follow Him. A simple, yet powerful and power filled command….Follow me! If we choose to follow this world, we will never find true peace and happiness and joy, nor shall we have eternal life in the presence of God. Yes, to follow Jesus requires a significant sacrifice. We must die to ourselves. This is so against that which the world teaches, but the world cannot provide any lasting contentment to us. Only through Jesus can we find this. This simple instruction of Christ is so hard to do, yet it is the one and only way that we will ever find our true purpose, the reason for which we were created. So, what is it going to be? Do that which you must so that you can follow the Lord. Eternity with Him awaits those who do truly follow Him!
