The Psalms seem to tell us and show us repeatedly that God is a refuge or a fortress for the vulnerable. (Psalm 71 v3. for example) In ancient warfare armies would lay siege to a fortress. Flaming arrows and spears, and even huge catapulted rocks would assail and rain down and batter the outer walls of a fortress. But in the inner recesses of that structure was another reality, impenetrable safety and security for the defending army. Sometimes a battering ram was deployed against the gates. Whether or not it succeeded in penetrating the outer defenses, often there were new and insurmountable challenges waiting on the other side.
This morning I felt the mental missiles of accusation and condemnation deflecting from the solid massive wall of my fortress. I sensed the freezing turmoil and chaos outside the wall but, at the same time, felt the welcome contrast of the peace and assurance within the warm inner sanctum of my refuge. I had to decide upon which sensation I would set the focus of my mind and heart. The more I yielded to the inner peace the more it contradicted and overruled the noise of false guilt, and the calmer I was in the face of it. The peace was more real the more I acknowledged it, the outside noise more distant and imaginary. I was thinking by faith instead of by sight or sound, thinking like a king, stately in his stride (Proverbs 30 v31) and taking everything in stride, surrounded by his army and his fortress, not like a slave tethered and fettered (tarred and feathered) deep in the dungeon of that fortress.
