WHAT DO YOU SEEK?

Welcome to this edition of The Awakening Call. This week, we look at another introspective issue – what do we seek for in following Jesus? A little awkward to ask ourselves this but it is important that we understand our motives in following the Lord.

In John 1:38, Jesus asked two of John’s disciple who chose to follow Him what they seek in following Him. I believe that He wanted them (as He does us) to be aware of their motives for choosing to follow Him. And given the promise in Matthew 7:7 - “… seek, and you will find…” we know that it is the Jesus we seek for that we will ultimately find.

One of the most common reasons for seeking Jesus is the forgiveness of sins and a desire to make heaven. Not a wrong reason- for at least in it we declare our need for a saviour. But a lot has changed in the church and multitudes have come into the Body of Christ seeking relief from life’s challenges and problems. A good enough reason to seek Him, except that a great number (especially in the African Continent) are now content to seek solutions in “churches” where it is clear to the discerning that the Spirit of Christ does not dwell.

While our reasons might be different, we cannot and must not assume that all who follow Him do so for the right reasons.

I believe that the most important of all the things to seek for in following Him is Him – as a person and not only in the things He is able to give and provide. If our sole desire is for Him – our hearts are made ready to accept only the things that are of Him. In other words, if there are miracles and healing and wealth, and deliverance but no Jesus – we will walk! When our hearts seek for no other but Him, we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13) and when we do, we will realise that everything else we need is in Him whom we have found.

With humility I ask us all to examine our reasons for following Jesus. Seeking Him only as a means to a life of comfort and ease will lead us to living a short changed life. Why? Because there is an indescribable depth of beauty, love, wisdom, power, and glory in Him. We must determine to follow Jesus seeking Him who is the express image of the invisible God and the fullness of the Godhead; for Him who is the water that a man drinks and he thirsts no more; for Him whom the wind and sea obey; for Him who gives power to us who believe to become the sons of God; for Him who alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life and is at work in us both to will and to do of the Father’s good pleasure; for Him who alone is the treasure that gives value and purpose to the earthen vessels that we all are.

Let us determine to follow Him seeking for the fullness of Him – forfeiting nothing.

How will our reasons for following Him affect the choices we make? If for example we seek Him so we can make heaven, then it must lead us to know and understand His declared pathway to eternal life. We know we must be born again and baptised. We must commit to living a life devoid of those things that will deny us access to eternal life in Him – Revelations 21:7-8; 22:14-15; Ephesians 5:3-7.

The whole essence of today’s word is to stir us up to come to terms with our purpose for seeking Jesus. Purpose defines and determines our choices and destination. The disciples whom Jesus asked this question answered that they wished to know His dwellings. And when they did, they left all and abode with Him.

Again I ask - what do you seek in following the Lord Jesus?
