When a man’s enemies and persecutors were no longer content to vilify and abuse him alone, but began to reach past him to his family including his wife and children, he drew a line, admonishing them, “Your insults and abuse toward me are one thing, but I will not tolerate any such abuse of my loved ones!” There is some similar protective mechanism at work in and among the Godhead, it seems, when Jesus warns his critics that he who speaks a word against himself can be forgiven, but he who speaks a word against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, neither in this age or the one to come. (Matthew 12 v32)
