Hadn’t considered before that part of the reason Jesus fell asleep in the boat during an especially violent storm was to show us our own tendency to sleep through a crisis, instead of being vigilant in the urgency of prayer. In fact his most intimate followers would do exactly that, sleeping through his crisis and leaving him on his own in the Garden of Gethsemane. And yet he was not on his own, his Father was with him, helping him grapple with the terrible reality of the enormity of the price he would need to pay for our eternal salvation.
Much to the the chagrin of my companions, I once slept my way through a car trip across the United States. In the process I missed many opportunities to see spectacles and attractions I would never again have the opportunity to witness. That wasn't sleeping through a crisis but simply missing many golden opportunies.  A crisis is often a golden opportunity to grow in character.
