It is a good way to pray when we pray to be “hidden behind the cross of Christ.” Because in fact if we as individuals and as a church are not hidden behind the cross of Christ we are helping to obscure it. That is, if we are not hidden behind the cross of Christ, then it is hidden behind us. And if the Cross is hidden behind us we are defeating our purpose as Christians, which is not to proclaim ourselves, but to proclaim the message of the Cross and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
   We are a little like the son or daughter of a famous parent who has distinguished him or herself in some way or in some area.  In at least one way or area they are extraordinarily gifted and have achieved someething remarkable.  Therefore the offspring lives, often with difficulty, in the shadow of that gift and achievement.  They become known as the son or daugher of so and so.  Only in our case and for the purpose of this analogy, we are the sons or daughters of God.  We learn to delight in that fact, though, not to chafe under it.
